Hamilton Airfield Site -The first phase of the Hamilton Wetland Restoration Project will provide nearly 700 acres of restored tidal and seasonal wetlands. The majority of the required site preparation has been completed for this phase, including the construction of miles of levees. The main runway and taxiways are now in the process of being buried under millions of cubic yards of clean dredged sediment. In early 2008, the site began receiving dredge material from the Port of Oakland's -50 foot deepening project via an offloading system located approximately 5 miles offshore in San Pablo Bay. It will take 6-8 years to complete the delivery of dredge material from the Port and other federal and non-federal maintenance dredging projects to complete the Hamilton site, after which time the levee will be breached and the site restored to tidal action. The Conservancy, Corps, Port of Oakland, and other JV partners held a partnership celebration event at the Hamilton site on March 21st to celebrate the arrival of the Port's dredge material at the Hamilton site and to recognize the hard work and dedication that has gone into and continues to go into these two important projects. North Antenna Field Site - Restoration of the 300-acre North Antenna Field site cannot proceed until site remediation work is completed by the Corps' Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) program. FUDS staff is working to release a Feasibility Study by September 2008. Bel Marin Keys Unit V Site - Language was included in the Water Resources Development Act of 2007 that added the 1,600-acre Bel Marin Keys Unit V (BMK) property to the authorized project. The Hamilton Project Cooperation Agreement (PCA) still needs to be amended before the Corps can proceed with work on the BMK site.
<purpose>The Hamilton-Bel Marin Wetlands Restoration Project restores over 2,500 acres of wetlands, provides a beneficial reuse of 24 million cubic yards of dredged materials, converts a former military base into a treasured public resource.</purpose>
