Approximately 932 acres of former commercial salt ponds will be restored to tidal wetlands. Outer, inner and middle Bair Islands cover a 3000 acre area. Middle and Inner Bair Islands will be restored as a second phase of restoration. Current activities include dredge placement and placement of fill material to raise the bottom elevation of Inner Bair Island and to convert the San Carlos Airport safety zone on Inner Bair Island to upland. Middle and Inner Bair Island will be breached to complete the restoration of tidal action to the area. During these phases, wildlife oriented public access will be improved. The EIS/EIR was completed in 2006. Construction drawings and regulatory permits were obtained in late 2006/early 2007. Adding dredged and fill material to Inner Bair Island began in 2006. Restoring Middle and Inner Bair Island will be done when funds are available and the bottom of Inner Bair is raised to the target elevation.
