The Bahia property was acquired in 2003 by the Marin Audubon Society (MAS) and restoration and enhancement has been completed. Since the acquisition was completed, 361.6 acres has been transferred to the Ca. Dept of Fish and Game and the MAS has retained 61.84 acres. The Marin Open Space District has taken title to the remainder of the purchased Bahia property, 207.6 acres, which consists of Blue Oak dominated hills. Tidal marsh restoration and seasonal pond enhancement and re-establishment of natural hydrology have been completed on MAS and DFG lands (423.5 acres)with the goals of creating productive estuarine emergent tidal wetland habitat, including associated updand transition zone, enhance existing ponds and possibly seasonal wetlands. The restoration was accomplished by excavating existing fill, lowering and breaching levees, allowing recolonization of tidal marsh plant species, and constructing and vegetating associated upland/transition zone where needed. This project restored 12 acres of estuarine intertidal wetlands, 6 acres of palustrine emergent wetlands, and 8 acres of wetland-associated uplands. We have several problems:1.walkers, horseback riders and bicycle riders have gone off trails and onto seasonal wetlands and transition zone areas. We erected signs and barriers and contracted local horse groups and the off trail use has greatly reduced.2.an internal levee is eroding. We are working with CALFED to try to get some funding to eventually get that repaired. 3.water is leaking out of our seasonal wetland under a flashboard/riser structure. We are also trying to deal with this. Our construction, engineering or hydroseeding contractors have not been paid for their last invoices or retention. We have been presented with a request for interest, but our contract includes language that they get paid when we get paid.
<purpose>The Bahia project consists of a completed aquisition and restoration of tidal marsh, associated upland transition zone and enhancement of two ponds and possible seasonal wetlands on 423.5 acres of the Bahia property.</purpose>
