Phases I and II of the project have already been completed by the State. Phase I involved opening 3,000 acres of salt ponds (Ponds 3, 4, and 5) to full tidal action in 2006. Phase II involved restoration of 1,700 acres (Ponds 1/1A, and 2) to managed ponds for waterfowl and shorebirds in 2007. Phase III involves the restoration of the final 1,900 acres (Ponds 6/6A, 7/7A, and 8) and construction of a recycled water pipeline to aid in bittern removal from Pond 7. The 10,000 acre Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area Restoration Project involves the restoration or enhancement of 11 former commercial salt ponds in the North Bay.
